You will enjoy hotels located in the heart of the city with close proximity to the train station and all the sights that Rome has to offer. Special Information Please note - the rest of the Italy itinerary is unescorted, with local guides joining you for day tours along the way. You will make your own way between destinations. Arrival airport transfers are included as part of your package. You will be met upon arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before collecting your 24 hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket. The route links Rome's landmarks, among them the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and St Peter's Basilica, so you can ride the full loop to get your bearings and then get off wherever you would like to spend longer. The rest of the day is free to explore the city on your own. You may wish to go inside one or two of the monuments, shop along Via del Corso, or cross the river for a long lunch in the lively Trastevere district. After breakfast, join the guided excursion to Pompeii. Lunch is included at a local restaurant in Pompeii, a set menu of regional cooking. A guide then takes you into the excavations, the Roman town buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Walk the original paved streets past the forum, the bath houses and the merchants' villas, with the volcano on the skyline behind us. You leave Pompeii in the late afternoon and continue to your hotel in the Sorrento area, where dinner is included and the rest of the evening is at leisure. The excavations at Pompeii cover a large site with uneven original stone paving, steps and little shade. Sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water are recommended.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, before joining a full day tour to Capri, with the Sorrentine coast falling away behind you. On arrival you join a guided boat tour around the island, past the cliffs, the sea caves and the Faraglioni rock stacks that rise straight out of the water. Back on land the rest of the day is free, with the funicular up to Capri town included. You may wish to browse the boutiques around Piazza Umberto I, walk out to the Gardens of Augustus for the view down over the Faraglioni, or sit with an espresso and watch the square. You return to the mainland by ferry in the afternoon. Dinner is included at your hotel tonight. The boat tour around the island is weather dependent and may be shortened or replaced in poor sea conditions.

After breakfast, check out and set off on a half day drive along the Amalfi Coast road. Cut into the cliff face and turning constantly, it takes longer than the distance suggests, and passes above Positano, Praiano and Amalfi, with terraced lemon groves and pastel houses stacked between the road and the water. The tour finishes on the Amalfi Coast, where you are transferred to your hotel for two nights. Dinner is included and the rest of the day is at leisure. The coast road is narrow and winding with a large number of bends. Passengers prone to motion sickness should come prepared.

Today is free to explore the coast at your own pace. The towns are linked by local SITA buses and, in season, by ferry, so moving between them needs no advance booking. You may wish to visit the striped cathedral of Sant'Andrea above Amalfi's main square and the paper mill museum in the valley behind the town, take the bus up to Ravello where the garden terraces look straight down the coastline, or stay closer to hand with a long lunch on the seafront and an afternoon by the water. The evening is at leisure.

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Salerno station to board the train north to Rome. On arrival at Roma Termini you are transferred to your hotel, with the rest of the day free. With one evening left in Italy you may wish to walk back through the old centre for a last look at the Pantheon or the Trevi Fountain by night, or find a trattoria near the hotel for dinner.
