Originally known as Avarau, meaning “200 harbours”, the island was sighted by Captain James Cook in 1774 and later named for Lord Palmerston of the British Admiralty. Today, fewer than 60 residents live here, most descended from Englishman William Marsters, a ship’s carpenter who settled in 1863.

On land, lush landscapes invite discovery, from cascading waterfalls to serene lakes, providing an idyllic balance of adventure and relaxation.

Disembark in Lautoka, Fiji's second largest city, located on the western side of the island of Viti Levu, 24 kilometres north of Nadi. As the gateway to Fiji's Sun Coast, it's a pleasant mix of sugar-cane fields, grass-covered peaks, rural villages, and market towns.
